Each February and March, Kodiak Island becomes a magnet for bald eagles as they converge along the braided rivers, estuaries, and coastal shores to court, pair up, and prepare nests for the breeding season. The island’s late-winter abundance of salmon and marine life concentrates eagles into spectacular communal roosts where mature birds wheel and call overhead, juveniles jostle for space, and intimate behaviors—courtship flights, bill-touching, and nest-building—unfold against a backdrop of snow-dusted mountains and glassy water.
Photographing this seasonal spectacle requires local knowledge of eagle movements, tides, and safe, low-impact vantage points; booking a tour with Focus Photo Tours and having Kris Luckenbach as your guide connects you with a seasoned Kodiak-based photographer who knows the rhythms of the island, where to find the best light, and how to anticipate the birds’ behaviors to capture decisive moments while minimizing disturbance. Kris’s experience and respect for wildlife, combined with guided access to prime locations and hands-on support with camera settings and composition, make a tour not just a chance to shoot dramatic, close-range images of eagles in breeding plumage and courtship, but also an opportunity to learn ethical wildlife photography practices and leave with powerful images that tell the story of Kodiak’s winter eagle congregation.
