Capture the Wild Heart of Pennsylvania in the Fall

Each autumn, the Pennsylvania Wilds come alive with the haunting sound of bugling elk echoing through the valleys. The rut is one of the most powerful wildlife spectacles in the East — and an unforgettable experience for photographers. Join photographer Traci Sepkovic in the heart of Pennsylvania’s elk country as we photograph mature bulls displaying, sparring, and gathering harems against a backdrop of fall color and rolling ridges.

Tour Highlights:

We’ll focus on capturing authentic behavior — from dramatic encounters between rival bulls to intimate moments in soft morning fog. This tour is designed for photographers of all levels. Whether you’re refining your wildlife technique or building your portfolio, I provide hands-on instruction in:

  • Anticipating and capturing behavior

  • Working with low light and foggy conditions

  • Composing environmental portraits

  • Managing fast action and changing conditions

  • Ethical wildlife photography practices

We photograph during the prime hours of activity — sunrise and sunset — when light and behavior align. Midday sessions include image review, strategy discussions, and personalized coaching to help you elevate your skills.

The elk rut is unpredictable, emotional, and raw. If you’ve never heard a bull elk bugle across a foggy valley, it’s something you’ll never forget. And if you have, you already know why we return.

Elk are large members of the deer family that were extirpated from Pennsylvania by the late 1800s and successfully reintroduced in the early 20th century-; today’s elk are descendants of those reintroduced populations that now thrive in the rolling forests and open meadows of the north-central region. The herd is managed carefully through a combination of habitat conservation, population monitoring, and regulated public hunting to maintain ecological balance. Elk are most visible in cool months and at dawn and dusk, often found in open meadows, riparian areas, and at forest edges where they feed on grasses, sedges, and browse; their seasonal behaviors—including spring calving, summer grouping, and the dramatic fall rut—offer varied photographic subjects and narrative possibilities.

A tour with Traci not only increases your chances of great images but also deepens your understanding of elk ecology and the ongoing conservation efforts that keep this iconic species a living, thriving part of Pennsylvania’s landscape. Our tour offers a rare combination of expert instruction, deep local knowledge, and patient, respectful wildlife viewing that makes capturing striking images of these magnificent animals both achievable and ethically responsible. Traci’s years of experience guiding photographers through the unique challenges of elk habitat—early morning light, low-contrast winter scenes, and the need for quiet, unobtrusive approaches—means you’ll receive practical, hands-on coaching in composition, exposure, and behavior-based anticipation so you can make the most of every encounter.
