Tour Highlights:

  • World-class hummingbird concentration: Photograph dozens of species in a compact, accessible area including resplendent quetzal habitat and high-elevation cloud forest that attracts varied hummingbird assemblages.

  • Expert-led instruction: Dee Webb provides hands-on guidance in the field on camera settings, focusing techniques for fast-moving subjects, flash and natural-light balance, composition, and ethical wildlife practices.

  • Prime photo stations: Carefully selected feeding stations and trails offer multiple vantage points and controlled backgrounds for close-up action shots, dramatic perching images, and territorial chase sequences.

  • Species you can expect to see and photograph: Fiery-throated Hummingbird, Scintillant Hummingbird, Green Violetear, Purple-throated Mountain-gem, and other highland specialties — excellent opportunities for both ID learning and portfolio-building images.

  • Small group format: Limited participant numbers for individualized coaching, faster movement between stations, and reduced disturbance to the birds.

  • Local naturalist insights: Learn about hummingbird behavior, feeding ecology, and habitat conservation from Dee and local guides to deepen understanding and inform more effective shooting strategies.

  • Conservation-minded experience: Emphasis on low-impact photography practices, promoting habitat preservation in the cloud forest and supporting local community initiatives.

San Gerardo de Dota is the best place to photograph hummingbirds. Its high-elevation cloud forest, cool climate, and pristine native vegetation create an unrivaled concentration and diversity of species—mountain gems like the Fiery-throated Hummingbird, Volcano Hummingbird, and Long-tailed Sylph are commonly encountered at close range around feeders and natural flowering banks, offering crisp, colorful shots against lush mossy backdrops and dramatic misty skies; its reliable network of experienced local guides and well-placed hides maximizes your shooting time at ideal light (early morning and late afternoon), while short, accessible trails and family-run lodges provide comfortable, uninterrupted access to feeders so you can capture tack-sharp images with fast shutter speeds and pleasing backgrounds without long treks; choosing our tour means you benefit from expert instruction on camera settings, lens selection, and composition tailored to hummingbird behavior, a small-group pace that ensures individualized attention, and the logistical ease of guided transfers, meals, and permits so you can focus purely on photographing these jewel-like birds at their most active and photogenic moments.

While hummingbirds are our primary focus, this region is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic highland birding destinations. Depending on the season, you may also photograph tanagers, flycatchers, and potentially the resplendent quetzal, adding variety and depth to your portfolio.
