Alaska Northern Lights
Dates: March 12-16, 2026; march 11-15, 2027
Location: fairbanks, alaska
Price: $2799USD
Fitness Level: LEVEL one; this tour involves minimal walking/hiking
Group Size: 6 participants + group leader; Minimum 3 to go
Tour Highlights:
We will take you on a marathon adventure—not just to see the lights but to give guests a true taste of what chasing the lights is like! Many nights we will not get back to the place we are staying until after 5 am if the Aurora is super active, then let the group rest most of the day.
We will cover up to several hundred miles a day, getting the group set up in the best possible locations we can, given the current weather and aurora forecasts.
Given the latitude of Fairbanks, it is a hot-spot for Northern Lights activity. Weather and conditions permitting, it is reasonable to expect to see the Northern Lights most nights. Days will only have a little over 9.5 hours of light at this time.
For those interested, during the days, we can take you around the Fairbanks area for landscapes and wildlife, where you could potentially see moose, foxes, lynx, ptarmigan, and even owls, including the Great Grey.
Further south, towards Healy and Denali National Park, we could see caribou. On clear days, you can see The Great One or Mt. Denali. You will be able to see much of the area, a beautiful endless landscape covered in the unique black spruce forests, but once the sun sets, we chase the lights!
On all of our tours, we try to take you to places away from other people or tours and do all we can to put you in places for unique images and memories.

Our photography tour in Fairbanks, Alaska, offers the unique opportunity for photographers seeking to capture the ethereal beauty of the northern lights combined with the rugged wilderness of Arctic wildlife. The northern lights here are among the most vibrant and frequent in the world due to Fairbanks’ location beneath the "Auroral Oval." This geographic advantage means clear, vivid displays far exceeding the intensity and duration found in more southerly locations. The auroras’ dynamic colors and patterns provide a constantly changing subject, allowing photographers to experiment with long exposures and wide-angle compositions to create unique images impossible to replicate elsewhere.
Daytime drives around Fairbanks open access to stunning Alaskan wildlife against a backdrop of tundra, boreal forests, and frozen rivers. These landscapes provide excellent context for photographing iconic species such as moose, owls, foxes, and eagles—perhaps even a wolf! The low winter sun creates dramatic lighting conditions throughout the day that enhance textures in both wildlife and landscape scenes. Opportunities abound for capturing animals in different behaviors—feeding, crossing rivers, or navigating snowy terrain—adding depth and storytelling to photographs.
Combining northern lights photography with daytime wildlife exploration ensures a diverse portfolio and an immersive Arctic experience. This tour also offers professional guidance from your leader, Scott Stone, who is intimately familiar with the best vantage points and animal habitats, increasing the likelihood of exceptional shots. The logistical convenience of a well-organized photography tour means you can focus entirely on your craft without the typical challenges of self-guided travel in extreme environments—from safety concerns to finding optimal locations under unpredictable weather conditions. It’s a rare opportunity to engage deeply with one of the planet’s most spectacular natural phenomena and pristine ecosystems in a way that elevates the quality and impact of your photographic work.

Daily itinerary
Day 1
Arrive at Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) any time morning or afternoon. Once everyone has arrived, we will get settled into our accommodations and then have a group dinner, where we will discuss the plan for the coming days. After dinner, based on the Aurora forecast, we will head out for our first night of shooting the Lights! We will stay out until we are too tired to photography anymore or the lights fizzle out, potentially until the early hours of the morning.
Day 2-4
After a nap and breakfast, we will explore the area surrounding Fairbanks in search of landscapes and wildlife to photograph. We will stop at the grocery store for snacks and drinks to sustain us during the days and likely will not return to town until dinner. After dinner, we will shift our focus to again capturing the Northern Lights.
Day 5
Make arrangements to depart Fairbanks at any time. We will do our best to keep everyone entertained until they leave with landscape/wildlife drives closer to town.
