This trip is geared towards serious wildlife photographers who understand they are pursing a highly elusive animal. We have partnered with the best guide/outfitter available, who puts significant effort into collecting data and getting to know the habits of the local sea wolves year round. Between their research and hundreds of encounters, there is no other organization with the level of experience they offer. Over the years, they have guided the world’s best professional photographers and filmmakers, and along with Jacquie, they will strive and support your efforts to add sea wolves to your portfolio.
Most sightings are 100 + feet away, though they have also had many close encounters as well. Some of the wolves encountered will be very confident and may pass close by unconcerned with your presence, others may be wary and keep a healthy distance. The majority of activity observed tends to be in the early mornings and late evenings, though an afternoon sighting is never out of the question. You will often pack meals to a given "hotspot" so you can avoid unnecessary movements and also avoid potentially missing a chance, with that in mind they often use photography blinds, or natural blinds.
To ensure the best possible opportunities, this tour will need to be kept flexible . This may mean camping ashore and using blinds or boats to access a variety of locations. This also means that your guides will adapt their plans as required. Your guides will do their best to understand the movements and motivations of the wolves. Early mornings and late nights are to be expected as you optimize every opportunity. This can mean hiking in the dark to a location, setting up, and waiting from dark-till-dark, sometimes enduring difficult weather. Sea wolves are a challenging creature and to be successful you must be willing to put comfort aside, stay focused, positive, and patient.
Though it is rare to not see and photograph sea wolves on this tour, we cannot guarantee you will get the photo of your dreams. It’s best to come with hopes and not expectations. These are un-baited, wild wolves, living in an extremely challenging landscape.
**Please note that accommodations may end up being remote coastal camps, if it offers the best chance of seeing wolves. If you are not a camper or looking for a lodge-based tour, this may not be for you. The tour operator does have a base camp with an 800 square foot building that often serves as a launching point for trips, and often they find good activity within walking distance. However, other times the wolves may lead you into other areas that require them to set-up a beach camp.
