Why We Created a Community for Women in Nature Photography
Bucket List Moment
An unforgettable morning spent photographing a sea turtle release in Costa Rica with an amazing group of women.
There is something incredibly powerful about standing in the quiet of nature with a camera in your hands.
The excitement of watching a fox appear at sunrise. The patience of waiting for the perfect light. The joy of finally capturing an image you've dreamed about for years.
But for many women, the journey into wildlife photography can also feel intimidating.
It can feel like everyone else knows more. Like asking a question might reveal that you're a beginner. Like you need the newest gear before you're "good enough." Or like you're stepping into a space where you don't quite belong.
At Focus Photo Tours, we've learned something very different.
Women don't need permission to belong—they need opportunities to feel welcomed.
Why This Matters to Us
Over the years, we've been fortunate to guide women from all over the world. Some arrived with decades of photography experience. Others had just purchased their first camera.
What amazed us wasn't the difference in experience.A place where beginners feel just as welcome as professionals.
A place where conservation matters.
A place where ethical wildlife photography isn't simply discussed—it's practiced.
A place where creativity, kindness, curiosity, and respect are valued as much as technical skill.
The Power of Community
Learning happens faster when we learn together.
Confidence grows when someone believes in us before we fully believe in ourselves.
Sometimes the encouragement we need isn't another YouTube tutorial—it's another woman saying, "I've been there too."
It was how quickly complete strangers became friends.
We've watched women celebrate each other's successes, encourage one another through frustrating days, share camera settings without hesitation, laugh through unexpected weather, and support each other far beyond the end of a photography tour.
Those moments reminded us that photography isn't just about the images we create.
It's about the people we meet along the way.
That's why we created Focused on Women in Nature Photography.
Women Behind the Lens
Standing side by side, cameras raised, waiting for the perfect moment. It's experiences like these that make our all-women photography tours so memorable.
More Than Photography
Our vision is about much more than improving camera skills.
We want to build a community where women feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, celebrating progress, and supporting one another without comparison.
Community reminds us that we're not competing with one another.
We're growing together.
Every photographer brings a unique perspective, a different story, and a different way of seeing the natural world. When we share those perspectives, everyone benefits.
Looking Ahead
This is only the beginning.
As our community grows, we're excited to create opportunities for women to connect throughout the year, no matter where they live.
Some of the things we're planning include:
Monthly live Zoom conversations with inspiring female photographers.
Guest speakers from across the wildlife photography community.
Educational sessions covering photography, editing, workflow, travel, and conservation.
Conversations about mindfulness, mental health, and the restorative power of nature.
Book clubs and meaningful discussions.
Friendly image critique sessions.
Small accountability groups.
Opportunities to celebrate each other's achievements and learn together.
Most importantly, we want this community to evolve based on what our members want to see. This isn't about us creating content—it's about creating connection.
Everyone Starts Somewhere
One of the biggest myths in wildlife photography is that great photographers were always confident.
The truth is, every photographer was once a beginner.
Every expert once asked their first question.
Every award-winning image started with someone learning how to use their camera.
Wherever you are on your journey, you belong here.
We'd Love You to Join Us
If you're passionate about wildlife, conservation, photography, or simply spending more time in nature with like-minded women, we'd love to welcome you into our community.
Join our Focused on Women in Nature Photography Facebook group, introduce yourself, share your favourite image, ask questions, or simply follow along.
Whether you're photographing birds in your backyard, planning your first wildlife adventure, or have been exploring the natural world for decades, you'll find women who understand the excitement, challenges, and joy that come with this incredible journey.
Together, we can build a community that inspires confidence, celebrates ethical wildlife photography, supports conservation, and reminds every woman that she belongs behind the camera.
We hope to see you there.
